Đề số 1: DANGEROUS SPORTS

Some people think that governments should ban dangerous sports while others think people should have freedom to do any sports or activities. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample:

Modern life witnesses the proliferation of many extreme sports such as car-racing, boxing, parachuting and so on. Some people think that the governments should ban those sports because of its risks to both players and society, but I believe that his prohibition should not be implemented.

On the one hand, some people think risky sports need to be banned because of several reasons. Firstly, trying extreme activities can put players’ lives in jeopardy. They encounter many unforeseeable dangers, which can not only trigger serious injuries but also deprive their lives. Parachuting, for example, is a modern sport attracting many youngsters, but if a player is not well trained about the use of the equipment and problem-solving skills and then cannot open the parachute in the air, this tiny mistake will ruin their lives. Secondly, the popularity of some dangerous sports may bring violence to real life. For example, sports such as boxing tend to obsess players as well as spectators, which makes them have a propensity for violence in real life.

However, I hold a strong opinion that the prohibition of those activities is not vital. Each individual has the right to enjoy his life and freedom of choice. Therefore, if he has a desire for thrill and adventure, no one can deter him from pursuing his passions. A height seeker should be allowed to climb mountains or try a parachute jump to satisfy himself, and this activity affects no one at all. Furthermore, those sports can stimulate bravery and problem-solving skills, leading to success at work. Because every decision they make in those extreme sports endangers their lives, they can hone decision-making skills under pressure. For this reason, at work or even in personal life, risky sports players can suffer stress better and come up with wise decisions in any conditions.

In conclusion, albeit dangerous for both risk-takers and others to some extent, extreme sports should not be banned in order for players to achieve their personal fulfilment and become more courageous.

Đề số 2: SPORTING EVENTS

Some people think that it is a waste of money for countries to host big sporting events like the world cup, and that the money would be better spent on other things. However, others think that hosting large sporting events has a clear, positive impact on a country. Discuss both views and give your opinion

There is fierce competition between nations to host major international sports events like the World Cup or Olympics as it is a unique opportunity to boost the national reputation of the host nation. In spite of its undeniable benefits, I believe that the costs are too great and therefore governments should prioritise other key issues to better benefit their citizens.

On the one hand, becoming a host nation for global events such as the World Cup or the Olympics brings a number of economic and infrastructural benefits. During these events, there is an influx of tourists from all over the world who need places to stay, restaurants to eat in and traditional products to purchase. The efforts made to cater to these tourists will remain long after they have gone. The cost of renovating a hotel might pay for itself during the event and then begin turning a large profit in later years. The other main area of development is related to the rapid expansion of quality infrastructure. Nations will be forced to invest in new sports facilities like swimming pools and stadiums as well as make renovations to pre-existing infrastructure like roads and airports. For example, China used the Beijing Olympics as an opportunity to modernise old buildings and roads.

On the other hand, these competitions use up tremendous resources from the host nation for a temporary competition. To ensure the success of these prestigious events, governments must waste a large percentage of the nation budget in the years leading up to the competition, oftentimes in the billions of dollars. The newly constructed facilities usually fall into disuse after each tournament. A salient example of this is Brazil as many of the swimming pools and sports facilities that were used in the 2014 Olympics are currently abandoned and becoming decrepit. Meanwhile, there are other pressing issues that have been festering including the need for new schools for underprivileged students and quality healthcare for the elderly population. If the government had prioritised these issues the country would be in a better position and its citizens would have a higher standard of living.

To summarize, due to the exorbitant costs, I am of the belief that the government should not allocate such a large percentage of its financial resources to hosting global events with negligible long-term impact. Instead these events should be hosted in the same countries year after year so that the new infrastructure pays for itself over time.

Đề số 3: SPORT STARS

Successful sports professional can earn a great deal more money than people in other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while think it is unfair. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

As a result of constant media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. Just like movie stars, they live extravagant lifestyles with huge houses and cars.

Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibility of governing the country. However, sports salaries are not determined he or she holds. Instead, they reflect the public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.

Those who feel that sports stars’ salaries are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. Competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform in their relatively short career. The pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight. So all of these factors may justify the huge earnings.

Personally, I think that the amount of money such sports stars make is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicates that our society places more value on sport than on more essential professions and achievements.
