Tính cách của con người – Characters/ Personalities là một chủ đề đã trở nên vô cùng quen thuộc đối với các sĩ tử luyện thi IELTS Speaking. Đây là một chủ đề vô cùng rộng lớn; giám khảo có vô vàn cách đặt câu hỏi xoay quanh nó. Vì vậy, cách luyện tập tốt nhất cho một chủ đề nói chung đó là chuẩn bị một số ý tưởng xoay quanh các sub-topics (chủ đề nhỏ) và sau đó mình có thể “thiên biến vạn hoá” khi đối mặt với nhiều câu hỏi khác nhau. Ví dụ, với chủ đề này, chúng ta sẽ có những sub-topics như là:

• Your personality
• A person you admire
• Personality traits of a good friend
• Personality traits of successful people

Trong bài viết này, IELTS Thanh Loan xin gợi ý với bạn những ý tưởng thông dụng nhất về 2 vấn đề, đó là: “your personality” và “personality traits of a good friend“.

1. Your personality

I would say that I have a great sense of humour. You see, I’m always the life and soul of the party that I take part in. That’s why I have a wide circle of friends.  Most of my friends told me that my jokes and funny stories could easily crack them up.

Tôi có thể nói rằng tôi rất hài hước. Tôi luôn là trung tâm của những bữa tiệc mà tôi tham gia. Đó là lý do tại sao tôi có rất nhiều bạn bè. Hầu hết bạn bè của tôi nói với tôi rằng những câu chuyện hài hước của tôi có thể dễ dàng khiến họ phá lên cười.

Well, I’m kinda the person who is extroverted. I prefer to hang out with others, and chit chat with them about this and that. That’s why my friends and I usually spend every evening sipping a  cup of coffee at our all-time favourite coffee shop and being deep in conversation with one another.

Chà, tôi là một người hướng ngoại. Tôi thích đi chơi với những người khác và trò chuyện với họ về những điều khác nhau. Đó là lý do tại sao tôi và bạn bè thường dành mỗi buổi tối để nhâm nhi một tách cà phê tại quán cà phê yêu thích và say mê nói chuyện với nhau.

Honestly speaking, I find myself rather unapproachable as it’s very difficult for me to make new friends. I would prefer to stay at home and immerse myself in a real page-turner rather than to go out and engage in an outdoor activity. That’s why I just have a few friends who share the same interest in reading books.

Thành thật mà nói, tôi thấy mình khá khó gần vì tôi rất khó kết bạn mới. Tôi muốn ở nhà đọc những cuốn sách hay hơn là ra ngoài và tham gia các hoạt động ngoài trời. Đó là lý do tại sao tôi chỉ có một vài người bạn – những có cùng sở thích đọc sách với mình.

• crack somebody up (phrasal verb): khiến ai cười
  ENG: to make somebody laugh a lot
• extroverted (adj): hướng ngoại
  ENG: lively and confident, and enjoying being with other people
• hang out (with somebody) (phrasal verb): ra ngoài với ai
  ENG: to spend a lot of time in a place or with someone
• chit chat with somebody about something (verb): nói chuyện phiếm với ai về vấn đề gì
  ENG: to talk informally about matters that are not important
• this and that (idiom): những chuyện khác nhau
  ENG: various things
• sip something (verb): nhâm nhi cái gì
  ENG: to drink, taking only a very small amount at a time
• all-time favourite (adj): (cái gì) yêu thích nhất từ trước đến nay
  ENG: that is liked the most of any time
• deep in conversation (with somebody) (noun phrase): chìm đắm vào cuộc trò chuyện với ai
  ENG: to get fully involved in a conversation with somebody
• unapproachable (adj): khó gần
  ENG: ​(of a person) not friendly or easy to talk to
• make friends with somebody (verb phrase): kết bạn với ai
  ENG: to become a friend of somebody
• immerse yourself in (doing) something (verb phrase): chìm đắm trong việc gì
  ENG: to become or make somebody completely involved in something
• a real page-turner (noun phrase): cuốn sách thú vị
  ENG: a book that is very exciting
• engage in (doing) something (phrasal verb): tham gia vào hoạt động gì
  ENG: to take part in something

2. Personality traits of a good friend

I would say a good friend needs to be extremely supportive. A faithful friend is different from a fair-weather friend as he/ she will always stand by you through thick and thin. He/ she is really willing to give you a helping hand if you’re in trouble.

Tôi có thể nói rằng một người bạn tốt cần phải sẵn sàng giúp đỡ người khác. Một người bạn trung thành khác với một người bạn xã giao (chỉ bên bạn lúc mọi chuyện thuận lợi) vì anh ấy / cô ấy sẽ luôn sát cánh bên bạn dù khó khăn. Anh ấy / cô ấy thực sự sẵn sàng giúp đỡ bạn nếu bạn gặp khó khăn.

Also, he/ she needs to be trustworthy so that you count on him/ her. To be more specific, he/ she is always honest and speaks openly from the heart. He/ she will be the kind of person who doesn’t divulge your secret to others. And he/ she won’t gossip about your private life.

Ngoài ra, anh ấy / cô ấy cần phải đáng tin cậy. Nói rõ hơn, anh ấy / cô ấy phải luôn trung thực và nói những điều thật lòng. Anh ấy / cô ấy sẽ là kiểu người không tiết lộ bí mật của bạn cho người khác. Và anh ấy / cô ấy sẽ không buôn chuyện bàn tán về cuộc sống riêng tư của bạn.

In addition to that, he/ she needs to be a good listener who is always ready to lend an ear to you. For example, if you fail a test and feel down in the dumps, he/ she will listen to your problems sympathetically. So, you and your friend can easily develop a mutual understanding.

Thêm vào đó, anh ấy / cô ấy cần phải là một người biết lắng nghe và luôn sẵn sàng kiên nhẫn lắng nghe bạn. Ví dụ, nếu bạn trượt một bài kiểm tra và cảm thấy chán nản, anh ấy / cô ấy sẽ lắng nghe vấn đề của bạn một cách thông cảm. Vì vậy, bạn và bạn ấy có thể dễ dàng hiểu nhau hơn.

Besides, forgiveness is one of the key personality traits of a good friend. You know, everyone can make a mistake, so a good friend is the kind of person who is able to forgive this mistake and not hold any grudges.

Ngoài ra, tha thứ là một trong những đặc điểm tính cách quan trọng của một người bạn tốt. Bạn biết đấy, ai cũng có thể mắc sai lầm, vì vậy bạn tốt là người có thể tha thứ cho lỗi lầm này và không thù hận.

  ENG: to develop the understanding of two or more people have for each other equally
• forgiveness (uncountable noun): sẵn lòng tha thứ
  ENG: the act of forgiving somebody; the quality of being willing to forgive somebody
• hold a grudge (verb phrase): giữ một mối thù
  ENG: to keep a feeling of anger or dislike towards somebody because of something bad they have done to you in the past
