I. URBANIZATION

1. Causes

People often view rural areas as backward and poor. Urbanization happens as many people from villages dream about moving to big cities to change their lives and move up the social ladder.

Thanks to the industrialization of big cities, there are many job opportunities for people to seek. These occupations are often well-paying, with a lot of other benefits such as pension or paid leaves.

As countries become more prosperous and discover more resources or industrial opportunities in rural areas, these areas are transformed into urban areas thanks to the investment poured in.

2. Positives

Big cities allow everyone to have better living conditions. There are still rural areas without proper housing, water sanitation systems, or electricity for people.

With improved education, living standards, and employment opportunities, people who move to big cities can earn more and eventually contribute more back to society.

3. Negatives

The biggest problem caused by urbanization is overcrowding. As too many people live in a limited space, it could lead to a shortage of housing options and also traffic congestion.

Many people move to big cities without any skills or qualifications and can’t find a job. Overcrowding and unemployment together lead to the development of slums where living conditions are even worse than in rural areas.

From these slums, diseases may spread and eventually affect the whole city. At the same time, children who grow up in these areas are more likely to become criminals, as a result of poverty and unemployment.

4. Solutions

To solve overcrowding, cities should build more sustainable housing options, such as high-rise apartment buildings, or even underground.

New residential areas, as well as all other areas with high population volume, should have good water sanitation systems to prevent the spread of diseases.

To address the root cause of overcrowding, there should also be educational messages and policies to promote family planning and control the population.

II. PEDESTRIAN AREAS

1. Positives

Pedestrianization can encourage urban residents to walk and cycle more, which, in the long run, can be beneficial for public health.

No cars are allowed in pedestrian areas, which can help improve the local environment and increase people’s awareness of building a greener living space.

Pedestrian zones give space for street arts to take place, which can contribute to preserving the indigenous traditions and cultures.

Playgrounds for urban inhabitants are usually very limited, so the introduction of pedestrian zones can provide them with more space for outdoor activities.

Pedestrian areas are safer and more attractive to both residents and tourists.
(Phố đi bộ an toàn hơn và hấp dẫn hơn đối với cả người dân và du khách.)

2. Negatives

In some countries pedestrian zones attract a lot of people to come to; therefore, it is the place where criminal activities such as pickpockets or robbery are likely to be performed.
(Ở một vài quốc gia, phố đi bộ hấp dẫn rất nhiều người đến, và vì thế đó là nơi mà các hoạt động phạm tội như móc túi hay cướp có thể xảy ra.)

Pedestrian streets can negatively affect traffic flows in city centers as the streets which are supposed to serve for transportation are now for other activities like street arts or playgrounds. This may cause traffic congestion in some other streets.
