1, boiling /ˈbɔɪ.lɪŋ/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: very hot
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: rất nóng
• Ví dụ: We don’t usually have such boiling hot weather.

2, freezing cold (adj)

• Định nghĩa: extremely low temperatures that are uncomfortable and can cause water to freeze.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lạnh cóng.
• Ví dụ: The temperature dropped to freezing cold levels overnight, causing frost to cover the ground.

3, to go below zero (verb)

• Định nghĩa: the temperature drops to a point lower than the freezing point of water, typically measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: xuống dưới 0 độ.
• Ví dụ: During the winter months, temperatures often go below zero, requiring people to bundle up to stay warm.

4, chilly /ˈtʃɪl.i/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: (of weather, conditions in a room, or parts of the body) cold
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lạnh mát
• Ví dụ: The bathroom gets chilly in the winter.

5, bitterly cold (adj)

• Định nghĩa: extremely and unpleasantly cold
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lạnh đậm.
• Ví dụ: I remember it was a bitterly cold December night.

6, mild /maɪld/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: mild weather is not very cold or not as cold as usual
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ôn hòa
•  The mild temperatures in the spring make it a perfect time for outdoor activities.

7, humid /ˈhjuː.mɪd/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: (of air and weather conditions) containing extremely small drops of water in the air
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: Ẩm.
• Ví dụ: The humid weather makes it feel even hotter than the actual temperature.

8, frost /frɒst/ (n)

• Định nghĩa: a weather condition in which the air temperature falls below the freezing point of water, especially outside at night
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: băng giá
• Ví dụ: When I woke up this morning, the ground was covered with frost.

9, foggy /ˈfɒɡ.i/  (adj) 

• Định nghĩa: with fog
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: có sương mù
• Ví dụ: It’s quite foggy outside; I can barely see the buildings across the street.

Thời tiết mưa – Rain 

1, to get drenched/soaked/wet to the skin (idiom)

• Định nghĩa: extremely wet
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ướt như chuột lột
• Ví dụ: We had no umbrellas so we got soaked to the skin in the pouring rain. 

2, gentle rain (noun)

• Định nghĩa: light and soft rainfall that is not heavy or intense.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa nhẹ 
• Ví dụ: The gentle rain was perfect for the newly planted garden, providing much-needed moisture without causing flooding.

3, to get caught in the rain 

• Định nghĩa: to unexpectedly be outside when it starts raining.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bị mắc mưa.
• Ví dụ: We didn’t have umbrellas, so we got caught in the rain on our way home from the park.

4, drizzle /ˈdrɪz.əl/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: rain in very small, light drops
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa phùn
• Ví dụ: Tomorrow will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

5, downpour /ˈdaʊn.pɔːr/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a lot of rain in a short time
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: trận mưa như trút nước
• Ví dụ: The rains were so heavy prior to the final downpour and flooding that the flood plains were already saturated.

6, to rain cats and dogs (idioms)

• Định nghĩa: to rain very heavily
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa xối xả
• Ví dụ: Don’t forget to take your umbrella – it’s raining cats and dogs out there.

7, torrential rain (noun)

• Định nghĩa: very heavy and intense rainfall, often leading to flooding and rapid accumulation of water.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa lớn, nặng hạt.
• Ví dụ: The streets were flooded after a night of torrential rain, causing traffic

8, flash flood (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a sudden and rapid flooding of a normally dry area, often caused by heavy rainfall.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lũ quét nhanh.
• Ví dụ: The heavy rain caused a flash flood that swept away cars and debris in the low-lying areas.

9, precipitation  /prɪˌsɪp.ɪˈteɪ.ʃən/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: water that falls from the clouds towards the ground, especially as rain or snow
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lượng mưa
• Ví dụ: Much concern has been expressed that acid precipitation causes a reduction in forest productivity.

10, shower  /ʃaʊər/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a short period of rain or snow
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa rào
• Ví dụ: There will be thundery showers over many parts of the country.

11, rainstorm /ˈreɪn.stɔːm/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a weather condition with strong wind and heavy rain
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa bão
• Ví dụ: After two rainstorm events, we collected the water in the buckets of each catch-basin and measured the volume of water collected in a graduated cylinder.

12, hail  /heɪl/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: small, hard balls of ice that fall from the sky like rain
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mưa đá
• Ví dụ: Hail and snow are causing treacherous driving conditions, and motorists are warned to drive slowly.

13, raindrop /ˈreɪn.drɒp/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a single drop of rain

• Ví dụ:  I listened to the raindrops pattering on the tin roof.

16, sleet /sliːt/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: wet, partly melted falling snow

17, to bucket = downpour (verb)

• Định nghĩa: to rain heavily

• Ví dụ: It’s absolutely bucketing down outside.

18, sprinkle /ˈsprɪŋ.kəl/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a very light fall of rain or snow that lasts only a short time

• Ví dụ: Don’t worry, it’s just a sprinkle; you won’t need an umbrella for this.

19, sun shower  /ˈsʌn ˌʃaʊ.ər/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a short period of rain that falls when the sun is shining:

• Ví dụ: Sun showers are unusual weather occurrences.

20, to rain buckets (verb)

21, wet /wet/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: used to describe weather or periods of time when rain falls

Thời tiết nắng – Sunny days

1, heatstroke /ˈhiːt.stroʊk/ (noun)

• Định nghĩa: a condition that can lead to death, caused by being too long in a very hot place
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: say nắng
• Ví dụ: No cases of death from heatstroke have occurred on this vessel.

2, sunny  /ˈsʌn.i/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: bright because of light from the sun
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: có nắng
• Ví dụ: We’re having the party in the garden, so I’m praying it’ll be sunny.

3, sun-drenched /ˈsʌn.drentʃt/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: a place that is sun-drenched receives a lot of sun
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ngập nắng
• Ví dụ: New York fashion week kicked off in a sundrenched Manhattan yesterday.

4, sunny spells (noun phrase)

• Định nghĩa: a period of time during which the sky is mostly sunny, but with some clouds present.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: một thời kỳ ngắn của thời tiết có nắng
• Ví dụ: It’s not freezing cold during these months and we still get lots of sunny spells.

5, baking hot (adj)

• Định nghĩa: as hot as if in an oven
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: nóng như thiêu
• Ví dụ: They worked all day under a baking hot sun.

6, sweltering  /ˈswel.tər.ɪŋ/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: extremely and uncomfortably hot

• Ví dụ: In the summer, it’s sweltering in the smaller classrooms.

7, sticky /ˈstɪk.i/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: If the weather is sticky, it is very hot and the air feels wet
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: nồm
• Ví dụ: The air is hot and sticky.

8, stifling /ˈstaɪ.fəl.ɪŋ/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: extremely hot and unpleasant
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ngột ngạt, khó thở
• Ví dụ: It’s stifling in here – should we open a window?’

9, dog days of summer (noun)

• Định nghĩa: the hottest days of the summer
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: những ngày nắng nóng nhất
• Ví dụ:  It was the dog days of summer again.

10, to soak up some sun (phrasal verb)

• Định nghĩa: sit or lie in the sun, because you enjoy it
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: tắm nắng
• Ví dụ: I was lying on my stomach soaking up the sun. 

11, to beat the heat

• Định nghĩa: remain cool in hot weather.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: tìm cách giữ mình mát mẻ và thoải mái trong thời tiết oi bức. 
• Ví dụ: With sizzling temperatures expected Friday, five San Jose community centers will extend hours on Friday to provide a place to beat the heat.

1, gloomy /ˈɡluː.mi/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: dark in a way that is unpleasant and makes it difficult to see
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: tối tăm, u ám, ảm đạm
• Ví dụ: What gloomy weather we’re having!

2, dry /draɪ/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: there is no water or moisture on it or in it
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: khô
• Ví dụ: Expect plenty of dry weather with sunny spells and frost and freezing fog by night.

3, windy /ˈwɪn.di/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: with a lot of wind
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: có nhiều gió
• Ví dụ: It was so windy that the tent nearly blew away!

4, snowy /ˈsnəʊ.i/ (adj)

• Định nghĩa: full of or like snow
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: có tuyết
• Ví dụ: We’ve had a very snowy winter this year.

5, lousy/ dreadful weather (noun phrase)

• Định nghĩa: very bad or unpleasant weather conditions.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: thời tiết xấu.
• Ví dụ: The camping trip was ruined by lousy weather, with continuous rain and strong winds.

6, unbroken sunshine (noun phrase)

• Định nghĩa: a continuous period of time when the sun is shining without interruption.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: chỉ có nắng, bầu trời không có mây.

Thành ngữ thời tiết – Idioms about weather 

1, Every cloud has a silver lining

• Định nghĩa: said to emphasize that every difficult or unpleasant situation has some advantage
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: sau cơn mưa trời lại sáng
• Ví dụ: He told us about his resignation—an absolute disaster at the time, but every cloud has a silver lining because it led to my appointment.

2, The calm before the storm

• Định nghĩa: a quiet or peaceful period before a period during which there is great activity, argument, or difficulty
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: sự bình yên trước cơn bão
• Ví dụ: I like to get everything done before the guests arrive and relax for a moment in the calm before the storm.

3, Under the weather

• Định  nghĩa: If someone is or feels under the weather, they feel ill
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: không khoẻ
• Ví dụ: I’m feeling a bit under the weather – I think I’m getting a cold.

4, To have your head in the clouds

• Định nghĩa: to not know the facts of a situation
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lơ mơ, đầu ớc ở trên mây
• Ví dụ: Janette must have her head in the clouds if she thinks her insurance company is going to pay the full cost of rebuilding and refurbishing her house.

5, Once in a blue moon

• Định nghĩa: not very often
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: hiếm khi
• Ví dụ: Once in a blue moon, there’s an issue I can’t resolve.

6, To take the wind out of sb’s sails

• Định nghĩa: to make someone feel less confident or less determined to do something, usually by saying or doing something that they are not expecting
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: lấy mất quyền lợi hay lợi thế của một người khiến người đó mất tin tưởng hay nhụt chí khí.
• Ví dụ: I was all ready to tell him that the relationship was over when he greeted me with a big bunch of flowers – that took the wind out of my sails.

7, To chase rainbows

• Định nghĩa: to waste your time trying to get something that you can never have
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: theo đuổi ảo mộng, viển vông
• Ví dụ: You can’t chase rainbows your whole life—you need to pick a stable career.

8, As right as rain

• Định nghĩa: to feel healthy or well again
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: khoẻ mạnh
• Ví dụ: You just need a good night’s sleep, and then you’ll be right as rain again.

9, As cold as ice

• Định nghĩa: to be extremely cold
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: rất lạnh
• Ví dụ: Feel my toes – they’re as cold as ice.

10, A storm in a teacup

• Định nghĩa: a lot of unnecessary anger and worry about a matter that is not important
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: việc bé xé ra to
• Ví dụ: It would seem that the process has come a long way forward and this is probably a storm in a teacup.

11, To get wind of something 

• Định nghĩa: to hear a piece of information that someone else was trying to keep secret
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: nghe lỏm được, nghe phong phanh được
• Ví dụ: I don’t want my colleagues to get wind of the fact that I’m leaving.

12, Snowed under

• Định nghĩa: having too much to do
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ngập đầu
• Ví dụ: I am totally snowed under at school

13, Come rain or shine 

• Định nghĩa: whatever happen
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: dù mọi chuyện có ra sao đi chăng nữa

Ví dụ: Come rain or shine, I’ll see you on Thursday.
