  • Định nghĩa: a friend that a person had when both of them were children 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bạn thời thơ ấu
  • Ví dụ: He’s in no state to say goodbye to his childhood friend.

2, a circle of friends (noun phrase) /ə ˈsɜːkəl ɒv frɛndz /

  • Định nghĩa: a number of close friends who usually do things together as a group. 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mạng lưới bạn bè
  • Ví dụ: He could establish a rapport with anyone of any age and leaves a wide circle of friends.

3, a trusted friend (noun phrase) /ə ˈtrʌstɪd frɛnd/

  • Định nghĩa: someone who is prepared to have those tough conversations with us 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người bạn đáng tin cậy
  • Ví dụ: You have been a good and trusted friend.

4, a family friend (noun phrase) /ə ˈfæmɪli frɛnd /

  • Định nghĩa: a person who has friendly relations with a whole family
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người bạn thân thiết của với gia đình
  • Ví dụ: He returned often and became a family friend.

5, a mutual friend (noun phrase) /ə ˈmjuːʧuəl frɛnd/

  • Định nghĩa: a person who is the friend of two people who may or may not know each other

  • Ví dụ: Lynn and Phil met through a mutual friend.

6, fair-weather friend (noun phrase) /ˌfeə.weð.ə ˈfrend/

  • Định nghĩa: someone who is a good friend when it is easy to be one and who stops being one when you are having problems

  • Ví dụ: She’s only a fair-weather friend

7, a classmate (noun)  /ˈklɑːs.meɪt/

  • Định nghĩa: someone who is in the same class as you at school 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bạn cùng lớp
  • Ví dụ: Trish is taller than most of her classmates.

8, a flatmate (noun) /ˈflæt.meɪt/ 

  • Định nghĩa: a person who shares an apartment with another person
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bạn cùng phòng
  • Ví dụ: Many websites are specialized in finding a flatmate.

9, a soulmate (noun)  /ˈsəʊl.meɪt/

  • Định nghĩa: someone, usually your romantic or sexual partner, who you have a special relationship with, and who you know and love very much

  • Ví dụ: Later that year she met Adam and she knew instantly that they were soulmates.

  • Định nghĩa: a person who hates or opposes another person and tries to harm them or stop them from doing something

  • Ví dụ: Max stole Lee’s girlfriend and they’ve been enemies ever since.

11, frenemy (noun)  /ˈfren.ə.mi/ 

  • Định nghĩa: a person who pretends to be your friend but is in fact an enemy 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: một người giả vờ là bạn nhưng thực tế lại là kẻ thù
  • Ví dụ: Her only friends are a trio of catty frenemies she hasn’t seen in months.

12, ally (noun) /ˈæl.aɪ/

  • Định nghĩa: someone who helps and supports someone else 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: đồng minh
  • Ví dụ: She is known to be a longtime ally of the chancellor.

13, best friend = buddy (noun) /ˈbʌd.i/ (informal)

  • Định nghĩa: a close friend

14, pen pal (noun)  /ˈpen ˌpæl/

  • Định nghĩa: someone who you exchange letters with as a hobby, but usually have not met

  • Ví dụ: I’ve got a pen pal in Australia.

15, a healthy relationship (noun phrase) /ə ˈhɛlθi rɪˈleɪʃənʃɪp/

  • Định nghĩa: a relationship that is filled with happiness, joy, and — most importantly — love 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mối quan hệ lành mạnh
  • Ví dụ: If you grew up in a dysfunctional family, you might feel lonely or struggle to develop healthy relationships with others.

16, friend in need is friend in deed (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: this means that a friend who helps you when you really need help is a true friend. 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: gian nan mới biết bạn bè
  • Ví dụ: A friend in need is a friend indeed, says an old proverb to be found in many languages.

  • Định nghĩa: the first person one loves in a romantic way

  • Ví dụ: You never forget your first love.

2, life-mate (noun phrase) /laɪf-meɪt/

  • Định nghĩa: a companion for life 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bạn đời
  • Ví dụ: She never married, but hoped for a life mate.

3, blind date (noun) /ˌblaɪnd ˈdeɪt/

  • Định nghĩa: a romantic social meeting between two people who have never met each other 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: cuộc hẹn hò giấu mặt cho hai người chưa từng gặp nhau trước đó
  • Ví dụ: Elaine arranged for me to go on a blind date with a guy from her office.

4, love at first sight (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: the experience of starting to be in love with someone as soon as you see them for the first time 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: yêu từ cái nhìn đầu tiên
  • Ví dụ: When I saw Kerry, it was love at first sight. 

5, lovelorn (adjective)  /ˈlʌv.lɔːn/

  • Định nghĩa: sad because the person you love doesn’t love you 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: thất tình
  • Ví dụ: The song that was sung was, of course, that of a lovelorn loon – the song of a forsaken love

6, lovey-dovey (adjective)  /ˈlʌv.iˌdʌv.i/

  • Định nghĩa: If two people in a romantic relationship are lovey-dovey, they show their love for each other in public by touching each other and saying loving things 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: yêu thương, âu yếm
  • Ví dụ: His lovey-dovey attitude is known to all

7, to enjoy someone’s company (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to enjoy being around, to enjoy spending time with, to have a fondness for the presence of 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: vui vẻ bên cạnh nhau
  • Ví dụ: I think we enjoy each other’s company, we see eye-to-eye on most things so we rarely fall out with each other.

8, to fall in love (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to be very attracted to someone and begin to love them 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: rơi vào lưới tình với ai đó
  • Ví dụ: He fell in love with a young German student.

9, to fall head over heels in love (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: completely in love 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: yêu say đắm
  • Ví dụ: Laura fell head over heels in love with Chris.

10, to be in a relationship (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to be romantically involved with someone 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: trong mối quan hệ
  • Ví dụ: As God created a companion for the first human, so we, too, are created to be in relationship with one another.

11, to pop the question (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to ask someone to marry you 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: cầu hôn
  • Ví dụ: So did he pop the question, then?

12, to tie the knot (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to get married
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: kết hôn
  • Ví dụ: So when are you two going to tie the knot?

13, to have an affair with (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: to have a sexual relationship, and especially a secret one with someone you are not married to, or with someone who is married to someone else 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ngoại tình
  • Ví dụ: She’s having an affair with a married man.

14, to fall out with (phrasal verb)

  • Định nghĩa: to argue with someone and stop being friendly with them
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: cãi vã
  • Ví dụ: He left home after falling out with his parents.

15, to break up with (phrasal verb)

  • Định nghĩa: If people break up, they stop having a relationship or stop working together 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: chia tay, chấm dứt với ai
  • Ví dụ: He’s just broken up with his girlfriend. 

16, through thick and thin (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: If you support or stay with someone through thick and thin, you always support or stay with them, even if there are problems or difficulties 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: “những thăng trầm” (trong cuộc sống)
  • Ví dụ: I will go on loving James through thick and thin no matter what happens.

17, toxic relationship (noun) /ˈtɒksɪk rɪˈleɪʃənʃɪp/

  • Định nghĩa: one that makes you feel unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked. 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mối quan hệ độc hại/ mối quan hệ không tốt 
  • Ví dụ: In their toxic relationship, he constantly belittled and controlled her, leaving her feeling trapped and emotionally drained.

18, long-distance relationship (noun) /ˈlɒŋˈdɪstəns rɪˈleɪʃənʃɪp/

  • Định nghĩa: a romantic relationship between two people who live far apart and so are unable to meet on a frequent basis 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: yêu xa
  • Ví dụ: Despite the distance between them, Sarah and John managed to maintain a strong and loving long-distance relationship through frequent communication and occasional visits.

19, long-term relationship (noun) /ˈlɒŋtɜːm rɪˈleɪʃənʃɪp/

  • Định nghĩa: something that is long-term has continued for a long time or will continue for a long

20, unrequited love (noun) /ˌʌn rɪˈkwaɪtɪd lʌv/

  • Định nghĩa: love that is not openly reciprocated or understood as such by the beloved.

  • Định nghĩa: a person who you work with, especially someone with a similar job or level of responsibility
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: đồng nghiệp
  • Ví dụ: American workers in recent years have seen their co-workers laid off or downsized out of jobs.

2, workmate (noun) /ˈwɜːk.meɪt/

  • Định nghĩa: a person who works in the same place as you, especially one who you are friendly with
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: đồng nghiệp
  • Ví dụ:  He has kept up with a number of his old workmates since his retirement.

3, client (noun) /ˈklaɪ.ənt/

  • Định nghĩa: a customer or someone who receives services
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: khách hàng
  • Ví dụ:  We always aim to give our clients personal attention.

4, business partner (noun) /ˈbɪznɪs ˈpɑːtnə/

  • Định nghĩa: any entity that you collaborate with on a business-to-business basis
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: đối tác kinh doanh
  • Ví dụ:  Paddy has second thoughts about making Vanessa a business partner.

5, staff (noun) /stɑːf/

  • Định nghĩa: the group of people who work for an organization
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: nhân viên
  • Ví dụ:  There is a good relationship between staff and pupils at the school.

6, team leader (noun) /tiːm ˈliːdə/

  • Định nghĩa: the person in charge of a team
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: trưởng nhóm
  • Ví dụ:  She is more than ready for the team leader role.

Tình từ chỉ các mối quan hệ tốt/ xấu – Adjectives 

1, close-knit /kləʊz-nɪt /

  • Định nghĩa: If a group of people are close-knit, they all help and support each other
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: thân thiết (thường dùng để diễn tả mối quan hệ trong gia đình) 
  • Ví dụ:  They are a very tight-knit family. If a problem happens for one member of the family, they’re all there.

2, supportive /səˈpɔː.tɪv /

  • Định nghĩa: showing agreement and giving encouragement
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ủng hộ, luôn giúp đỡ
  • Ví dụ: I have a strong, loving and very supportive relationship with my parents.

3, solid /ˈsɒl.ɪd/

  • Định nghĩa: of a good standard
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: được xây dựng dựa trên sự tin tưởng, trung thành và an toàn
  • Ví dụ: If you can sort out your differences in a constructive manner, it is a good sign that you are in a solid relationship

4, stable /ˈsteɪ.bəl/

  • Định nghĩa: firmly fixed or not likely to move or change
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ổn định – sự bền chặt của mối quan hệ được xây dựng qua năm tháng
  • Ví dụ: They’ve been in a stable relationship since their first date 15 years ago.

5, insincere /ˌɪn.sɪnˈsɪər/

  • Định nghĩa: pretending to feel something that you do not really feel, or not meaning what you say
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: giả tạo
  • Ví dụ: And all this praise just because the poor man has died – doesn’t it strike you as a bit insincere?

6, tense  /tens/

  • Định nghĩa: nervous and worried and unable to relax
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: căng thẳng, các vấn đề tưởng chừng không bao giờ chấm dứt
  • Ví dụ: There’s a very tense relationship because he’s lost his job and he is a little bit nervous.

7, hollow /ˈhɒl.əʊ/

  • Định nghĩa: (of situations, feelings, or words) without value, or not true or sincere
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: trống rỗng, không có tình yêu, sự tôn trọng hay các cảm xúc gì khác
  • Ví dụ: The relationship was hollow. I felt that nobody was loving me, caring or bothered about me at all.

1, cement a relationship /sɪˈment/

  • Định nghĩa: to make something such as an agreement or friendship stronger
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: gắn chặt, thắt chặt
  • Ví dụ: The university’s exchange scheme has cemented its links with many other academic institutions.

2, foster a relationship /ˈfɒs.tər/ 

  • Định nghĩa: to encourage the development or growth of ideas or feelings
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: thúc đẩy
  • Ví dụ: They were discussing the best way to foster democracy and prosperity in the former communist countries.

3, be/keep in touch with sb (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: seeing someone or communicating with someone regularly
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: giữ liên lạc với ai
  • Ví dụ: We kept in touch for a while after college.

4, to be on good terms with = to get on well with (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: have a friendly or pleasant relationship with someone
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: có mối quan hệ tốt, hoà hợp với ai
  • Ví dụ: My ex-wife and I are still on friendly terms.

5, to lose touch with (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: to no longer communicate with someone
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mất liên lạc
  • Ví dụ: I lost touch with Katie after she moved to Canada.

6, to get on like a house on fire (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: If two people get on like a house on fire, they like each other very much and become friends very quickly
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: hợp cạ nhau và nhanh chóng trở thành bạn bè
  • Ví dụ: I was worried that they wouldn’t like each other but in fact they’re getting on like a house on fire.

7, to go back years (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: ​if two people go back a period of time (usually a long time), they have known each other for that time
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: biết nhau lâu
  • Ví dụ: Their relationship goes back to when they were at college together.

8, to have ups and downs (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: ​If someone or something experiences ups and downs, a mixture of good and bad things happens to him, her, or it
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: trải qua nhiều thăng trầm
  • Ví dụ: Like most married couples we’ve had our ups and downs, but life’s like that.

9, to hit it off with sb (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to be friendly with each other immediately
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: ăn ý với nhau, tâm đầu ý hợp với nhau từ lần gặp mặt đầu
  • Ví dụ: We had similar ideas about the show, and the two of us hit it off right away.

10, to strike up a relationship (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: to create or establish a relationship or conversation with someone
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bắt đầu một mối quan hệ
  • Ví dụ: She struck up a relationship with an artist soon after she arrived in Paris.

11, to make friend with (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: If you make friends with someone, you begin a friendship with them
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: làm bạn, kết bạn với 
  • Ví dụ: He has made friends with the kids on the street.

12, to work at a relationship (collocation)

  • Định nghĩa: putting effort, time, and dedication into maintaining and improving a romantic partnership
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: cố gắng duy trì mối quan hệ
  • Ví dụ: Working at a relationship involves actively listening to each other’s concerns and finding solutions together

13, to get back together (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: ​to start a relationship with somebody again, especially a romantic relationship, after having finished a previous relationship with the same person
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: bắt đầu lại một mối quan hệ
  • Ví dụ: We split up a few months ago but got back together last week.

14, to spring to someone’s defense (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: go quickly to defend someone (can be against physical or verbal attack.)
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: nhanh chóng đến để bảo vệ ai đó
  • Ví dụ: Charlene sprang immediately to her son’s defence.

15, be on the same page/wavelength (with somebody)(idiom):

  • Định nghĩa:  if a group of people are on the same page, they are working well together and have the same aims
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: tâm đầu ý hợp, tư tưởng tính cách tương đồng
  • Ví dụ: We need to get environmentalists and businesses on the same page to improve things.

16, to know sb/sth inside out (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: If you know something or someone inside out, you know them extremely well.
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: hiểu rất rõ ai đó/ cái gì
  • Ví dụ: Liam has played for some of the greatest clubs in Europe and knows the game inside out.

17, to hold sb in high regard (idiom)

  • Định nghĩa: to admire, respect smb 
  • Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: tôn kính, rất ngưỡng mộ ai đó
  • Ví dụ. Sheldon Cooper holds Professor Geller in high regard as he’s one of the distinguished scientists in the US.
