“Personality”(tính cách) là một chủ đề từ vựng rất thông dụng và phổ biến trong tiếng Anh. Hiển nhiên chủ đề này sẽ được xuất hiện rất nhiều trong IELTS Speaking khi mô tả người, nhưng cũng nói đến trong IELTS Writing trong những câu hỏi như: tính cách quan trọng hay bằng cấp quan trọng khi tìm việc, ….

• Định nghĩa: someone who is shy, quiet, and prefers to spend time alone rather than often being with other people >< an energetic person who enjoys being with other people

4, Talkative /ˈtɔː.kə.tɪv/

5, Generous /’dʒenərəs/

• Định nghĩa: willing to give money, help, kindness, etc., especially more than is usual or expected

• Ví dụ: It was generous of you to lend me the money.

6, Charming /’t∫ɑ:miη/

• Định nghĩa: a special quality of a person or thing that makes the person or thing attractive

• Ví dụ: He was thoughtful and charming.

7, Discreet /dis’kri:t/

• Định nghĩa: careful not to cause embarrassment or attract too much attention, especially by keeping something secret

• Ví dụ: They are very good assistants, very discreet – they wouldn’t go talking to the press.

• Định nghĩa: feeling a moral responsibility to do your work carefully and to be fair to others

• Định nghĩa: working or operating quickly and effectively in an organized way

• Định nghĩa: having or showing courage

14, Hospitable /’hɔspitəbl/

• Định nghĩa: friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors

• Ví dụ: The villagers were very hospitable to/towards anyone who passed through.

15, Humble /’hʌmbl/

• Định nghĩa: not proud or not believing that you are important
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: khiêm tốn
• Ví dụ:  Please accept our humble apologies for the error.

16, Merciful /ˈmərsɪfl/

• Định nghĩa: someone who is merciful is willing to be kind to and forgive people who are in their power
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: nhân từ, khoan dung
• Ví dụ: “God is merciful,” said the priest.

17, Mischievous /ˈmɪstʃəvəs/ 

• Định nghĩa: behaving in a way, or describing behaviour, that is slightly bad but is not intended to cause serious harm or damage

• Ví dụ: She has a mischievous sense of humour.

18, Obedient /oʊˈbidiənt/ 

• Định nghĩa: doing, or willing to do, what you have been told to do by someone in authority

• Định nghĩa: good or quick at noticing things

20, Open-minded /ˌoʊpən’maɪndəd/ 

• Định nghĩa: willing to consider ideas and opinions that are new or different to your own

• Định nghĩa: If someone or something is dependable, you can have confidence in him, her, or it

• Định nghĩa: nervous or uncomfortable because you are worried about what people think about you or your actions

2, To be the life and soul of the party 

• Định nghĩa: someone who is energetic and funny and at the centre of activity during social occasions

• Ví dụ: Johnny was talking to everyone and telling funny jokes. He was the life and soul of the party.

3, A social butterfly

• Định nghĩa: describes someone who’s socially oriented, outgoing, and often very charismatic and charming

• Ví dụ: You can always spot a social butterfly at a party, talking to everyone and never staying with one group for too long.

4, Laid-back /ˌleɪdˈbæk/

• Định nghĩa: someone who behaves in a very relaxed way, nothing seems to bother them.

6, (To have) vim and vigour

• Định nghĩa: someone who has a lot of energy and enthusiasm

• Ví dụ: Tom is full of vim and vigour. He’s always so excited and enthusiastic about everything!

7, A smart cookie

• Định nghĩa: a clever person who makes good decisions

• Ví dụ: My grandmother was a smart cookie. She grew up on a farm but she built a successful business.

8, A tough cookie

• Định nghĩa: a person who is able to deal with difficult situations and not be easily defeated, frightened, or upset

• Ví dụ: Honestly, she’s a tough cookie. She can handle any challenge that comes her way. 

9, A mover and shaker

• Định nghĩa: a powerful person who initiates events and influences people.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người khôn khéo, giỏi giang trong một lĩnh vực
• Ví dụ: I am definitely a mover and shaker in Marketing. I’ve created a lot of ideas for my previous company. These ideas have attracted a huge number of customers.

10, A go-getter 

• Định nghĩa:  someone who is proactive, determined and works hard to achieve what they want.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người xông xáo, năng nổ trong công việc
• Ví dụ: He’s a real go-getter, I think he is going to be our boss one day soon

11, A guy/girl Friday

• Định nghĩa: a male/female office worker who does different types of work
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người có thể đảm đương nhiều việc trong công ty
• Ví dụ: I did everything from ordering office suppliers to answering customer emails and picking up lunch. I guess that I’m a girl Friday.

12, A jack of all trades

• Định nghĩa: someone who can do many different jobs
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người có nhiều kỹ năng, hiểu biết nhiều lĩnh vực
• Ví dụ: I am a jack of all trades. For the past 6 years, I’ve learnt to play a lot of instruments such as piano, guitar, saxophone, harmonica.

13, Down-to-earth (adj)

• Định nghĩa: practical, reasonable, and friendly
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người rất thực tế, có ý thức và rất khiêm tốn
• Ví dụ: I like working with Jane, she’s so down-to-earth. Her plans and expectations are very reasonable. 

14, A man/woman of his/her word

• Định nghĩa: someone who keeps their promises
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người đáng tin cậy, giữ chữ tín, có trách nhiệm
• Ví dụ: If Gary said he’ll be there at 6:00, you can count on it. He’s a man of his word. 

15, A happy-go-lucky

• Định nghĩa: A happy-go-lucky person does not plan much and accepts what happens without becoming worried.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người luôn vui vẻ, vô lo vô nghĩ
• Ví dụ: He is a happy-go-lucky boy. He’s always so cheerful. 

16, Cold fish

• Định nghĩa: someone who seems unfriendly and who does not share their feelings

• Ví dụ: The commissioner will probably be some cold fish of a lawyer who considers the legal side and not the moral side.

17, Dark horse

• Định nghĩa: a person who keeps their interests and ideas secret, especially someone who has a surprising ability or skill

1, A busybody

• Định nghĩa: a person who is too interested in things that do not involve them
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người luôn xía quá nhiều vào chuyện của người khác.
• Ví dụ: My aunt is such a busybody – she’s always asking nosy questions about my love life.

2, A couch potato

• Định nghĩa: a person who watches a lot of television and does not have an active life
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: kẻ lười biếng, luôn chỉ biết ngồi một chỗ hưởng thụ, thay vì giúp đỡ mọi người.
• Ví dụ: A person who lives a sedentary lifestyle may colloquially be known as a “couch potato”.

3, Full of hot air

• Định nghĩa: If something that someone says is hot air, it is not sincere and will have no practical results
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người nói quá nhiều, nhưng nội dung những câu nói đó không mang lại lợi ích cho người khác.
• Ví dụ: His promises turned out to be a lot of hot air.

4, Know-it-all

• Định nghĩa: a person who thinks that they know much more than other people
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người luôn tỏ ra mình biết mọi thứ, nhưng thực tế lại không phải như vậy.
• Ví dụ: You act arrogant or literally you act like you is a know-it-all

5, A cheapskate

• Định nghĩa: a person who is unwilling to spend money
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người bủn xỉn, keo kiệt vô cùng
• Ví dụ: John bought his mother a $5 gift for her birthday. I can’t believe what a cheapskate he is!

6, A worrywart /ˈwɝː.i.wɔːrt/

• Định nghĩa: a person who often worries, especially about things that are not important
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người luôn luôn lo lắng
• Ví dụ: My mother’s such a worrywart that if I don’t call her every day, she starts imagining I’ve been killed in a horrible accident.

7, An armchair critic

• Định nghĩa: used to refer to a person who knows, or says they know, a lot about a subject without having direct experience 
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người không làm gì nhưng luôn ngồi chỉ tay năm ngón, kêu ca phàn nàn về nhiều thứ
• Vị dụ: It’s easy to be an armchair critic, but no one ever takes action to help solve the problem.

8, Behind the times = A fuddy-duddy  /ˈfʌd.iˌdʌd.i/

• Định nghĩa: a person who has old-fashioned ideas and opinions
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người cổ hủ, không chịu tiếp cận với thứ mới hơn
• Ví dụ: My dad doesn’t have an email address. He’s a little behind the times.

9, Set in his/her ways

• Định nghĩa: If you say that someone is set in their ways, you mean that they have been behaving in the same way for many years and do not want to change.
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người bảo thủ, cứng đầu, ương ngạnh
• I showed my boss the benefits of this new strategy, but he’s set in his ways and doesn’t want to change anything.

10, A slimeball

• Định nghĩa: a very unpleasant person whose friendly manner is not sincere
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người đáng ghê tởm, xấu tính, giả tạo
• Ví dụ: Harry dumped Kate and immediately started trying to hook up with her 16-years-old sister. What a slimeball!

11, A stickler for something

• Định nghĩa: a person who thinks that a particular type of behaviour is very important, and always follows it or tries to make other people follow it
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người câu nệ nguyên tắc, quá khắt khe
• Ví dụ: Clean up the classroom after you’re done with your project. The teacher’s a stickler for neatness.

12, A wet blanket/party pooper

• Định nghĩa: a person who says or does something that stops other people enjoying themselves
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người nhàm chán, luôn làm người khác mất vui
• Ví dụI hate to be a wet blanket, but we should probably turn down the music – our neighbors are trying to sleep.

13, Chatterbox

• Định nghĩa: a person, especially a child, who talks a lot:
• Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: người nói nhiều
• Ví dụ: Your sister’s a real chatterbox!
