1. How often do you use your dictionary?

Countless times a day, and seven days a week, I have to say. I’m an English learner so I look up new or uncommon words in dictionaries each time I encounter them. Using dictionaries is part and parcel of my daily activities.

2. Do you like paper dictionaries or electronic dictionaries?

I definitely will gravitate towards using an electronic dictionary. It has been a long time since I last carried a heavy printed dictionary. Now, all that I need is my smartphone connected to the Internet. I mean e-dictionaries are portable and really come in handy.

3. What kinds of dictionaries have you used before?

As a high-schooler without a smartphone, I largely relied on my paper dictionary. Since I started going to college, I’ve turned to e-dictionaries. I have a liking for monolingual dictionaries because they explain the contexts in which a word can be used in detail.

4. What do you mostly use dictionaries for?

Of course, I utilize dictionaries to look up the meanings as well as pronunciation of words which I am not familiar with when I am learning or reading. Besides, a good dictionary can give me the synonyms or antonyms of a word or ways of combining words to form collocations.

5. What kinds of dictionaries do you think are most useful?

I believe an excellent dictionary should give us everything related to a word such as meanings, pronunciation, examples, word families and such like. Such information helps us gain insights into a word and apply it naturally and effectively.

6. If someone gave you a dictionary as a gift, how would you feel?

As long as someone gives me a present, I will highly appreciate it whether it be a dictionary, a book or whatever. But I don’t think someone will buy me a dictionary because my friends all know I fancy using online dictionaries.

Well, I guess it would be exhilarating to write a dictionary but I also believe that not many people are qualified for this job. For the most part, only knowledgeable professors are entitled to doing it.

Describe a dictionary you use

When I read the cue card, the first thing springing to mind was the oxford learners’ dictionary. As its name suggests, the dictionary has been published by the University of Oxford, an educational institution with enormous prestige.

I first came to know this dictionary many years back when I was a high-schooler. At that time, the dictionary was highly recommended by my English teacher so I decided to purchase a print version of it. This dictionary really came in handy. Each time when I revised for my English exams and encountered a new word or an uncommon expression, the dictionary managed to lend me a helping hand.

Since I started going to college and had my own smartphone, I’ve turned to the online version. When I first accessed the website, I was instantly impressed by its elegant design. The clean layout makes it really straightforward to navigate the interface. It turned out that the online version even offered a more detailed explanation of words than the print one.

It has been 7 years since I started using the Oxford learners’ dictionary. Whether it is the paper dictionary or the electronic one, either of them is my go-to choice when it comes to an excellent dictionary. I would say it was a contributing factor in the fact that I was able to gain admission to the college of my choice. I’m majoring in English and looking up new words in the dictionary is part and parcel of my daily activities.

1. How will dictionaries be like in the future?

Well, I just imagine that in the future as science and technology develop in leaps and bounds, humans may have an in-built screen that will appear in the air right in front of us each time we need it. With this virtual screen, we could watch movies, play video games, access electronic dictionaries or whatever. Another scenario is that we could implant a dictionary into our bodies through a minor operation. It’s a little scary but cool, right? Who knows what the future may hold?

2. Do you think paper dictionaries will disappear in the future?

It is safe to say that paper dictionaries have not become obsolete yet as today there are still many people favouring this kind of dictionary. But I believe that the chances of its extinction are higher. A lot of learners, especially youngsters, have been gravitating towards electronic dictionaries due to the convenience they offer and sooner or later they will totally replace the print version and paper dictionaries may be kept in museums as artefacts serving scientific purposes.

3. Why do many people like using electronic dictionaries while many others favour the paper ones?

In my opinion, electronic dictionaries or print dictionaries have their own merits. With regard to electronic ones, they are portable and compact. They help to look up words and phrases quickly. Some dictionary software can be downloaded from the Internet to your computer or smartphone free of charge. As for paper dictionaries, they don’t need electricity or the Internet. Paper dictionaries are also useful if rules of particular places ban electronic devices. For instance, in translation exams at my college, paper material is allowed whereas electronic devices are not.

4. What are the disadvantages of using a dictionary?

Well, I can’t think of many demerits of looking up new words in a dictionary. But I believe that if a learner relies too much on a dictionary and looks up the meanings of a new word each time he encounters it, this habit will increase his dependence on dictionaries. As a result, he may not be able to guess the meanings of a new word without a dictionary. This may be detrimental to his learning process. I mean guessing new word meanings from contexts is always vital to language learning.
