Everyone uses the internet to solve problems, but in my experience students use it more than anyone else to find quick solutions and so it was with me on the day of my dissertation defense not even a year ago. I was terrified of failure after all of the long hours I’d spent in front of the computer, over six months, preparing the most in-depth research paper I’d ever attempted.

I got to the university early and surprised all of my classmates by wearing a new Ao Dai I’d made just for this occasion. I was determined to put my best foot forward and show everyone else the results of my labor. Unfortunately, a few hours before my presentation was scheduled to begin, I decided to take a nap.

One of my classmates eventually woke me up, but I only had fifteen minutes to get my notes and slides in order, throwing me into a bit of a panic. All of a sudden I realized that I’d left my USB at home! Luckily, when I called my husband he knew exactly what to do. He logged into my laptop and uploaded all of the files I’d prepared to my Google Drive, following my instructions to the letter, while calming me down through the process.

When I went into the presentation room, all I had to do was log into the WiFi and work directly out of the internet browser. Once everything was said and done, the instructors informed me that I had passed and the relief I felt was palpable and overwhelming.
